• Occupational therapy in the public school is provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act.

    "To ensure that all children with disabilities have available to them a free appropriate public education that emphasizes special education  and related services designed to meet their unique needs and prepare them for employment and independent living..."

    At Akron Central Schools students are referred for an occupational therapy evaluation by request through the Office of Curriculum & Instruction or through the Instructional Support Team (IST).

    Occupational Therapists:

    Work closely with the classroom teacher, special educators, parents, and other school personnel to determine how delays may be impacting a child's participation/performance in school activities. 

    The occupational therapist provides therapy to facilitate skill development in the areas of:

    • fine and gross motor
    • sensory processing
    • perceptual skills
    • self-help skills

    Qualifications for these services include:

    • Standardized test results
    • Informal screening
    • Classroom performance/teacher recommendation
    • A prescription from the student's pediatrician must be obtained for services to be implemented.
