Your Child:
Does His or Her Homework but
Forgets to Take it to School1. Discuss with your child the importance of remembering to take his/her homework to school. Make sure your child understands the relationship between his/her behavior and the positive or negative consequences that may follow.
2. Work with your child to see if they can come up with a strategy to help remind them to bring their homework to school.
3. Help your child to establish an organizational routine. Have an identified spot for his/her book bag. Institute the routine that completed homework is packed immediately in to the book bag. Encourage your child to go through his/her book bag every night to make sure they have the needed items. If your child is using his/her agenda appropriately, he/she can use the agenda to cross reference needed supplies. It is usually most helpful to have the book bag stored in an obvious and unforgettable place such as near the exit door or coat closet.
4. Allow your child to experience the natural consequences of forgetting his/her homework (poor grades, homework detention, loss of privileges).
5. Give positive reinforcement when your child displays the behavior you are looking for.
6. If necessary, you may find it helpful to provide your child with a written list of directions you want them to follow (see above suggestion #3).
7. Establish a certain time each day for your child to take care of his/her homework responsibilities.
